How does the Internet work?

A good understanding is needed to be able to use the internet effectively.

We can look at it as a structure with two main components. The first principal component is termed hardware. Hardware includes your computer and the cables that will carry the information. Other hardware would then be phones, satellites, routers and servers and other devices. People search the internet for information. Machines that store this information is called servers. Cables and fibre-optic cables transmit the data from transmission lines .

There is also a wireless transmittance that can take place.

All machines that connected to the internet must follow a set of protocols, without this set of protocols whereby all must adhere to no communication can take place between the computers.

Computers connecting to each other is referred to as ‘networking’ with one another.

Each computer that connected to the internet must have an address. It must be exclusive. Your address allows you to be able to connect globally to other devices. This address is also the IP address.

Everyone must connect to the internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Some people use a local area network (LAN). If you connect to the internet, you already have a unique IP address. A Wide Area Network (WAN) may consist of connections to company headquarters, smaller networks and connects to more than one Local Area Network.

The (ISP) Internet Service Provider sustains a pool of modems for dial-in clients. A computer will manage the data flow from the modem to a dedicated line router. This setup serves access to the network and may be referred to as a port server.

There is a Domain Name Service or DNS database that keeps track of all the IP addresses on the internet and computer names. Many computers make part of the DNS database.

When you enter a web address to your web browser, the browser will first connect to a primary DNS server. This server obtains the IP address for the domain name you entered. Then the browser will connect to the target computer and will request the web page you asked.

The URL is a unique address for a file that is accessible on the Internet. When you type in the URL on your Web browser’s address line, with a domain name, you will connect to the Web site. After the browser finished loading all images and information, the page loads into the browser window.

There are many Internet services like electronic mail. Commonly referred to as E-mail. This service allows the client to connect with other clients and correspond by sharing and receiving information.

The internet is a complex structure for exchanging information. This exchange of information takes place all the time, all over the world simultaneously. It makes life more comfortable and is a great tool not only for the businessmen but also to the ordinary person on the street.
